Chapter 9

I was just finishing up going over the books in the office when the bell on the front door of Nutties jingled. I poked my head out to see who it was. Sean, the cleaning guy who had been at Dennis’s house earlier, stood just inside the entrance carrying a laptop.

“Hey, Sean, what brings you by?” I asked.

“I found this laptop wedged behind Dennis’s bed when I was doing a final clean of the place today,” he said, holding up the computer. “Figured you might want to take a look at it, see if there’s anything useful on there.”

My eyes lit up. This could be just the break I needed in the case. “That’s fantastic, thank you! Here, come on back to the office and you can set it down on the desk.”

I held open the half-door to the counter so Sean could step behind it. As we walked to the office, I asked, “Did you notice anything else unusual over there today?”

Sean shook his head. “Nah, place was pretty orderly overall. Dennis strikes me as the type who would hide something if he didn’t want it found, so I gave it a real thorough going-over before handing off the keys.”

“I appreciate you bringing this by. Dennis was clearly up to some shady business, so this laptop could help shed some light on things.”

We entered the small office and Sean set the laptop gently on the desk. “No problem. Happy to help if it means figuring out what happened to the guy. He was a piece of work, but no one deserves to end up like that.”

I nodded. “Agreed. Well, hey, thanks again!”

Sean gave a little wave and headed out of the shop. I was tempted to power the laptop on immediately but didn’t want to accidentally corrupt anything. I’d have to be smart about this.

I stared at the laptop sitting on my desk, temptation gnawing at me. This could be the key to unraveling the tangled web surrounding Dennis’s murder. Who knew what kind of incriminating information might be stored on that hard drive?

Curiosity finally got the better of me. I had to take a look. Sitting down in the creaky office chair, I lifted the lid of the laptop. The screen flickered to life, prompting me for a password. Of course it wouldn’t be that easy.

I tried a few obvious options - Dennis’s name, his birthday, his social. No luck. I drummed my fingers on the desk, thinking. What would an arrogant sleazeball like him choose? A thought niggled at the back of my mind, and on a whim, I typed in ‘bigbrain’ and hit enter.

The password accepted, I shook my head and laughed. Even in death, Dennis remained a caricature of himself. Now, time to see what secrets this laptop might hold.

I opened the file manager and started poking around. Most of it was innocuously labeled - taxes, invoices, personal documents. One folder caught my eye though - ‘Nutties Dirt.’ I opened it up eagerly.

Jackpot. The
